The Simple Life – First Blog!
THE SIMPLE LIFE!
My name is Pastor Pete Tremblay and my wife’s name is Pam. (Therefore the site is PeteNPam.com) We are a pastoral couple and have served Free Methodist Churches since 1987 in Georgia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. We have been happily married for 32 years. We love the Lord Jesus Christ! We love people! That’s the main reason for this Blog. Much of the suffering experienced by those we love is the result of lifestyle choices. Certainly we suffer because of the actions of others. But oftentimes I am my own worst enemy because of the choices I make. You probably have that t-shirt as well. We’ve discovered the best sort of life is a simple life – life as God intended it from the beginning.
The Bible lifestyle (which is as God intends life) is inherently a simple lifestyle. This simple lifestyle is a “back to Eden” plan. In the beginning, God made everything “good”, but the sin of humankind distorted the race and then all of creation. We were damaged at the core of our being. Our priorities were distorted. Our values became self-centered. Our gods became our appetites. Those appetites include more than simply our food choices, but every appetite of life. For example our appetites for sexuality, entertainment, happiness, and so much more. We became pleasure-driven. That drive for pleasure has resulted in much personal suffering through mental, physical and spiritual illness. We hurt ourselves. We hurt others. But there is great hope.
Because of the redemption found in Jesus Christ our Lord, we have the opportunity to restore, to a large degree, what was lost and return to the Eden lifestyle. The Gospel is not simply about getting to Heaven, it is about getting Heaven into us. The lifestyle God designed at the beginning was basic, simple and dependent on the provision of God. It included a diet that was plant-based (Gen. 1:29) and taken just as God provided it without any processing; whole and raw. Today science is catching up with the Bible. In scientific studies such as reported in T. Colin Campbell’s book, “The China Study”, science has verified that a plant-based diet provides optimum health.
Likewise, our lives should be free “of the love of money” and materialism. Stress is killing people in the Western world. But God’s Word tells us…
Hebrews 13:5 ESV Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
We should be people of “faith” and positive concerning God’s love and goodness.
We should commune with our Lord using all the means of prayer He has given us.
Ephesians 6:18 ESV praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
The plan of God in Christ Jesus is to restore to us a large part of what was lost when Adam and Eve disobeyed Him and decided to follow their own appetites. Through the Gospel, Jesus promises us “abundant life”. That life can begin in this world and will be finally perfected in the next. But the Gospel is about more, as I said, than getting into Heaven. It’s about getting Heaven into you in every dimension of life.
John 10:10 ESV (Jesus tell us) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
In short, the Eden lifestyle is one of simple faith, dependence, and satisfaction in the Lord. That’s what we want to talk about!
